The Role

As an APS 6 Data Analyst, you will play a crucial role in supporting the External Workforce Reform Branch. You will work closely with an EL 1 to explore and interpret external workforce data, helping uncover trends and provide useful insights. Your day-to-day will involve applying analytical methods to identify key performance indicators (KPIs) and supporting the development of models that forecast workforce demand, market usage, attrition rates, and skill requirements.

This is a role where your skills will make a practical difference and help shape better workforce planning.

About our Team

The breadth of technical challenges and opportunities to develop and grow your experience and leadership capabilities are second to none. Career development and movement is actively encouraged with a huge variety of subject matter areas to choose from.

DFG have been undertaking an expansive reform journey to ensure we are a trusted and professional business partner, delivering financial insight to inform decision-making across Defence. Reflected through the Defence Values and Behaviours, culture is central to everything we do in Defence. We have a shared responsibility to strengthen, foster and grow a positive and inclusive culture within Defence Finance Group (DFG). Culture relies on leadership at all levels and a commitment from all of us to actively model the Defence Values and Behaviours.

As we enter the next exciting phase of our reform including major investment in systems and automation, as well as process and policy reform, we are looking for new talent from the private and public sector with fresh ways of thinking to join our rejuvenated culture

Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented professional who thrives on turning numbers into stories. You will have a strong foundation in statistics and hands-on experience in data collection and analysis, paired with a problem solving mindset and the ability to adapt in a dynamic environment.

You will ideally bring a combination of the following skills and expertise:

  • Data Analysis: Skilled in extracting, cleansing, and analysing large datasets from diverse sources to uncover actionable insights.
  • Statistical Modelling: Familiarity with statistical techniques to identify patterns and support workforce trend analysis.
  • Data Visualisation & Storytelling: Ability to design clear, compelling charts, dashboards, and visual narratives to stakeholders.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with SQL, PowerBI (or similar tools like Tableau), and Python (or R). Exposure to cloud analytics platforms (e.g. Cloudera, MS Azure) and machine learning modelling is desirable.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences and collaborate across teams.
  • Problem Solving: Creative and strategic thinking to tackle workforce challenges with data-driven solutions.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable navigating evolving business needs, technologies, and methodologies.

If you bring a mix of these skills, you will be well positioned to succeed and to make a real difference in how Defence plans for the future.
