Create your best future and join Westpac as a Lead AI Engineer.

What’s the role?

As a Lead AI Engineer in the GBU CIO team, you’ll uplift AI engineering capability and lead delivery of enterprise-grade AI and GenAI solutions on Westpac’s strategic data platforms. You’ll set technical direction, engineering standards, and coaching so AI is applied safely and effectively across the SDLC for data products.

You’ll design and build production-ready agentic and GenAI applications that integrate with our modern cloud data ecosystem—selecting fit-for-purpose patterns (e.g., RAG, tool use, guardrails) and meeting enterprise requirements for security, privacy, reliability, scalability, and cost.

Working across squads, you’ll partner with data and platform engineering, product, and risk/governance teams to embed AI into core data products and ways of working. You’ll drive reuse through shared libraries and templates and improve delivery efficiency with AI-assisted development practices.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Deliver end‑to‑end AI/GenAI solutions from discovery and design through deployment and production support.
  • Define and evolve reference architectures, standards, and reusable components aligned to the data platform and SDLC.
  • Build and operationalise GenAI using modern patterns (prompting, RAG, agents) with appropriate guardrails and responsible AI controls.
  • Integrate AI into enterprise platforms and cloud environments, ensuring performance, security, resilience, and cost‑effective scale.
  • Uplift engineering capability by embedding MLOps/LLMOps, production readiness, and mentoring across squads.

What do I need?

Essential:

  • Strong hands-on experience with GenAI frameworks such as LangChain,  AutoGen, DSPy, or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering production GenAI solutions, including prompt engineering, RAG, agents/tool use and evaluation.
  • Proven technical leadership in cross-functional teams (e.g., leading solution design, setting standards, performing code/architecture reviews, and mentoring engineers).
  • Strong experience embedding AI into the SDLC, including CI/CD, automated testing, evaluation, monitoring, and operational support (MLOps/LLMOps).
  • Strong software engineering capability, particularly in Python, including designing maintainable services, APIs, and libraries.
  • Strong experience designing and delivering solutions on cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Experience with containerisation and deployment technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.

Desirable:

  • Experience implementing AI/ML solutions in Financial Services, including working within regulated environments.
  • Experience with streaming/event-driven architectures and real-time AI systems.
  • Experience contributing to AI governance, model risk, privacy and security controls, and/or internal assurance processes.
