The Opportunity
Mission Data (MD) Division within the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is responsible for providing the foundational data capabilities to support all of ASD's functions. We do this via the provision of data platforms and services, management of ASD's mission data, and providing complex analytic development and support, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities.
The Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) team in MD builds and deploys machine learning systems at scale. They work with data scientists and other engineers to bring cutting-edge machine learning projects to production.
As an EL1 ML Engineer at ASD, you can expect to:
- Design, develop, and oversee the production of MLOps platforms tailored for ASD.
- Implement, monitor, and resolve issues related to machine learning models in operational settings.
- Create and execute MLOps pipelines for the deployment of machine learning models into production.
- Work with fellow engineers to facilitate seamless integration into enterprise software while remaining informed about the latest advancements in machine learning technologies and best practices.
- Articulate ideas effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Persuade and engage stakeholders to foster the successful development and integration of machine learning systems and tools.
- Offer technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers in planning, designing, documenting, prototyping, and constructing intricate machine learning systems and tools.
- Lead a team of ML Engineers, and recognise opportunities for learning among team members and empower them through task delegation.
- Lead the scoping, specification, and accreditation processes for machine learning engineering initiatives.
- Solicit and manage technical requirements on an ongoing basis.
- Collaborate with technical leadership at both Branch and Divisional levels to ensure alignment of the machine learning engineering program with architectural and technical strategies.

Eligibility
- Australian Citizenship - Applicants must be an Australian citizen. Only in exceptional circumstances can this requirement be waivered.

Desirable Qualifications, Experience or Training
Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:
- Software development with Python.
- MLOps tooling such as MLFlow, Ray, Kubeflow, Kserve, or an enterprise scale machine learning platform.
- Building DevOps pipelines with GitLab CI/CD or equivalent.
- Kubernetes, Docker.
- Data curation, engineering, and wrangling.
- Optimisation of machine learning models for enterprise inferencing.
