HorizonOne are excited to be partnering with Icon Water to recruit new team members into their Digital Technology Group.

Wholly owned by the ACT Government, Icon Water has delivered essential services to Canberra for over 100 years. While primarily a water and sewerage provider, it also invests in electricity and gas through private partnerships, operating across both government and commercial sectors. Icon Water is focused on sustainability, playing a key role in addressing climate change, protecting the environment, and achieving net zero emissions by 2045.

Serving approximately 190,000 customers, the business manages over $3.2 billion in assets—including dams, treatment plants, reservoirs, and networks of mains and pumps—and generates around $490 million in annual revenue.

The Opportunity

Icon Water is progressing through a significant digital and data transformation, making this a highly impactful time to join. In this permanent, ongoing role, you will help build on the foundation for the organisation’s self-service analytics capability an area with high business engagement and demand.

This is a great permanent opportunity for a data analytics engineer to join a small, growing team where you will directly influence data capability, architecture decisions, and the future direction of the function.

  • Help define the direction of data-driven decision-making and uplift the organisation’s use of data
  • Strong demand from business teams for better data insights. You’ll be stepping into a role where your work is immediately valued and needed.
  • Work on genuinely interesting data problems, connecting information from multiple sources to uncover insights.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collect and clarify reporting and dashboard requirements, identify data sources, and secure required access from data owners
  • Extract, integrate, clean and transform data from SQL, on-prem, API and cloud systems using Power Query (M), ADF, SSIS and dataflows to build reusable semantic models
  • Apply dimensional modelling (star/Kimball) and optimise models for refresh, performance and organisation-wide reuse while minimising duplication
  • Automate data extraction at source by developing SQL/OData queries and Power Automate flows, reducing manual processes and shifting transformations upstream
  • Maintain and enhance existing dataflows and semantic models, ensuring alignment with business needs and managing endorsement, permissions and governance
  • Support business users through training, walkthroughs and documentation, and develop reports where Power BI capability is limited
The Ideal Person

You bring your intermediate or above skills in Power BI (in particular DAX, data flows and semantic models) and are comfortable working with SQL and cloud-based data environments.

You take a thoughtful approach to data, ensuring models and reports are accurate, reliable, and fit for purpose, and you can translate what a business asks for into what they truly need in a clear and approachable way. You take a methodical approach to your work an understand the importance of careful documentation, and data governance.

You’re positive, curious and are looking for a long term role that you can grow, develop within as you continue to deepen your knowledge of the organisation, data and people so you can help others get the most from their data.
