About Orygen

Orygen is Australia's Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health and the largest translational research organisation dedicated to youth mental health in the world.

For over 30 years, Orygen has led groundbreaking early intervention and developed evidence-based models of care to improve the mental health outcomes of young people aged 12-25.

About the job

The Full‑stack AI Engineer is responsible for building AI‑powered features end to end, from interfaces to model integration, to improve real outcomes for young people. You will own the product experience and the AI layer beneath it, shipping reliable, safe, modern features with LLMs, semantic search, and personalisation services such as AWS Personalise.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager you will:

  • Deliver meaningful features that support young people and clinicians, working collaboratively in a cross‑functional squad.
  • Build secure, reliable systems with modular code, strong privacy practices, and safe handling of sensitive data.
  • Integrate responsible AI into production features, from pipelines to monitoring, ensuring safety and clinical suitability.
  • Develop scalable backend services with strong observability, CI/CD, and containerised delivery for stable, accessible products.
  • Contribute to engineering excellence through shared standards, knowledge‑sharing, and continuous improvement across the chapter.

Skills and experience

The following criteria should be met for consideration for this position:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • AI integration experience, such as applying language models or personalisation/recommendation services, along with an understanding of responsible AI practices in production.
  • Backend engineering capability with Python, secure patterns, scalable architectures, and strong API and data‑model design.
  • Cloud, delivery, and observability skills including CI/CD, Docker, AWS, logging, metrics, and incident response.
  • Clear technical communication with the ability to explain design decisions, run experiments, and navigate complex, ambiguous engineering problems.

Orygen is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team, and values clear communication, collaboration, and initiative alongside technical depth. We encourage applications from candidates who meet most, but not necessarily all, of the technical criteria.

Benefits

  • Salary between $160,000 - $180,000 p.a commensurate with skills and experience + 12% superannuation and $15,900 in NFP salary packaging + $2,600 meals and entertainment card.
  • Embrace the freedom of a work from home model.
  • Make a real impact on young people in a dynamic, youth-centered environment.
  • Support Orygen's mission for youth mental health and contribute to positive social change.

How to apply

If you're ready to make a difference in youth mental health and be part of a collaborative, innovative team, apply now.

This is full time, ongoing position.

Applications will close on 25th July (2pm), unless a suitable candidate is found sooner.

Before applying at Orygen, it's important to understand that you may encounter sensitive information related to mental health as part of your work. Being aware of this and how it could affect you is essential in deciding if this is the right opportunity for you.
