The Role

As a Data Scientist, you can expect every day to be different, but there are a few workflows that are consistent.  In line with the expectations for each ASD level, you will be responsible for identifying suitable data sets and problems, as well as subsequently planning and performing analysis on a wide range of data. You will do this in accordance with our legislative, policy and ethical frameworks. 

In your role, you will be expected to liaise with both customers and engineers and will need to be able to explain the methods and results of your work to people with varying levels of data science experience. Continuous learning and a thirst for knowledge are expected as you maintain your knowledge of both our abilities and the state of the art possibilities, blending the best of what the data science community has on offer. You will need to work in a multi-disciplinary environment to deliver capabilities that allow ASD’s intelligence and cyber analysts to have the right information, provided in the right way at the right time.

Key Duties:

ASD 4 Data Scientist

An ASD 4 Data Scientists, you will work to the broad direction of the executive leadership to perform and achieve complex data generation and analysis work within an integrated workforce. You will require knowledge of compliance with the legislative frameworks, government decision-making and an understanding of Australian Signals Directorate’s mission.

You will be deliberate with the learning of technical and analytical skills and proactive with communicating with their team and leadership. You will exercise sound decision-making to provide technical advice and in line with direction, will engage in complex problem solving to deliver data science solutions that affect strategic, political or operational outcomes for the Australian Signals Directorate.

You will positively contribute to building team capability and will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development for their career. 

ASD 5 Data Scientist

An ASD 5 Data Scientist will work under limited direction to perform and achieve complex data generation and analysis work within an integrated workforce. You are accountable to have and maintain a well-developed understanding of compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and the Australian Signals Directorate’s mission and policy requirements.

You will be accountable for organising your workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility. You will interpret and provide advice within the data function area based on legislation, policy and procedures. You will undertake research and analysis, conduct investigations and perform data generation and analysis work to achieve results.

You may coordinate and contribute to the work of a team and provide advice and assistance on methods of task completion to team members. You may be a team coach and are expected to be capable of reviewing and developing the quality of work undertaken by others and identifying opportunities for on-the-job training within a work unit.

As a Data Scientist, you will be required to engage and communicate with stakeholders to respond and provide advice on issues to mission outcomes. You will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.

ASD 6 Data Scientist

An ASD 6 Data Scientist is accountable, under the broad direction of the executive leadership, to perform and achieve complex to very complex data generation and analysis work within an integrated workforce. You will require knowledge of compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and strong understanding of Australian Signals Directorate’s mission.

You will exercise a degree of independence and perform a subject matter expert role. You will exercise sound decision making and judgement to provide strong technical advice. Engage in complex to very complex problem solving and issue management and may coordinate and contribute to detailed or sensitive projects that impact on strategic, political or operational outcomes for the Australian Signals Directorate.

You may be a Line Manager and mentor, and will be accountable for the outcomes of the planning for work and performance goals. You are expected to be capable of building team capability through coaching, feedback and developing the quality of work undertaken by others within a work unit.

As a Data Scientist, you will be involved in key stakeholder relationships and will be required to identify relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns to develop and communicate methodologies and practices to achieve outcomes. You will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development of their work area.


About our Team

Data scientist roles within Mission Data Division (MDD) develops capabilities and data solutions to enable ASD mission areas, to support ASD and ADF mission requirements.

This is achieved through the delivery of data platforms, ensuring the data is fit for purpose, delivering bespoke mission tools and applications, and providing complex analytic support, including Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence capability.
