Position Overview

The AI & Data Governance Officer (ADGO) role sits within the Digital Court Program (DCP) Data team and contributes to the effective operation of AI and data governance arrangements. The role is central to implementing a governance framework to facilitate the Courts, Tribunal and entity's safe and effective adoption of AI in accordance with government policy, and supports the ongoing operation, monitoring and stakeholder engagement with established AI and data governance processes. The ADGO is not involved in approval of AI use cases or in their implementation; those functions are managed by separate stakeholder teams.

As part of the multi-disciplinary Data team, the ADGO collaborates with colleagues across governance, analytical and technical functions, contributing to areas of functional overlap and identifying opportunities to work jointly to achieve shared outcomes.

The focus and responsibilities of the ADGO role will evolve over time, in accordance with changes in the entity's AI and data maturity and broader operating context, and the balance between AI governance and data governance activity will be determined according to strategic priorities and resource demands.

The ADGO role requires a sound grasp of AI and data governance principles, particularly in a government and judicial context, and excellent organisational, stakeholder management and communication skills. The successful candidate will have experience leading the design and implementation of governance activity in a complex operating environment, supported by a deep understanding of administrative, change management, risk and compliance considerations.

The key duties of the position include:

  • Collaboratively lead or support the design, development and implementation of new AI governance processes and frameworks required to operationalise government AI policy, including tools, workflows and policies that are compliant and suitable for the entity's operating environment.
  • Maintain the entity's mandatory AI use case register, including ensuring it remains aligned with changing policy requirements and reporting obligations are met.
  • Engage with and support internal parties to facilitate their understanding and compliance with the AI governance framework and related activities. Maintain a diverse stakeholder network to support expertise, engagement and delivery in AI and data work streams.
  • Maintain a broad understanding of relevant governance and legislative frameworks, as well as developments in the AI and data landscape. Assess the impact of changes and proactively contribute to appropriate responses.
  • Support governance activities across the Data team, DCP and IT more broadly as required, including the management of both AI- and data-related requirements.
  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary and geographically dispersed team, promote and adhere to established processes and support continuous improvement of ways of working.

Selection Criteria

  • Proven experience in designing, implementing and supporting robust governance frameworks in a complex operating environment.
  • Sound knowledge of AI and data governance requirements in a government context, with proven ability to maintain an understanding of, and appropriately respond to, a rapidly changing landscape.
  • Sound judgement and an ability to strategically coordinate work activity and stakeholder engagement in the context of competing priorities and broader strategic objectives.
  • Excellent written communication and organisational skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • A sound understanding of the Courts' operations and our AI and data landscape (or proven ability to quickly acquire such an understanding), and of the strategic significance of AI and data initiatives in that context.
