The Role & Team

To support the way our Data team is transforming Specsavers into a data-driven business and to support with our continued business growth we have a newly created position for a Senior Data Engineer to join our Technical Service Team. The team's vision is to establish a data culture within the business and to deliver high quality data products to deliver organisation wide insights and quality data products to help accelerate robust decision making, drive consistency and enable self-service for the business.

Reporting into our Lead Data Engineer, you will look at our overall technical capability for ingesting, managing and exploiting data (via modelling and modelled data), while ensuring future capability expansion, cost management and scalability.

At Specsavers, we believe in adopting a hybrid approach to support our people and the future of work. When not working from an alternative location, you will be based at our support office in Port Melbourne. Due to the nature of some projects, occasional after-hours meetings may be required.

What we are looking for:

  • Strong technical ability and understanding of how databases work, as well as the use of data development software (ETL packages) and programming languages (SQL, Python and Pyspark) to develop tools to extract, transform and load data, as well as to document the creation of these tools.
  • Hands on experience with:
    • Azure Data Lake
    • Azure Data Factory
    • Azure Databricks (inc. SQL and Python)
    • Azure SQL Server
    • Azure DevOps/Git
  • Proficient capability to understand business processes in detail, to apply knowledge and acquire more, to understand and create requirements, apply them to a tool design and execute its build.
  • Excellent communication skills as you will need to discuss technical principles and business processes in simple language to people at all levels.
  • Enthusiasm for learning, trying new things, sharing knowledge and developing skills in others
  • The ability to invent and innovate in the determination of creative solutions to all problems, and to take on work for which there is no set of rules or industry-standard answer
