Multiple roles being hired at AI Engineer level.
Work with some of the brightest minds in the AI space.
What is the opportunity?
At Westpac, we're building the future of banking through responsible, human‑centred AI. As we continue to grow our inhouse AI capabilities, we are looking to hire multiple engaging, passionate and technically proficient AI Engineers to complement our Westpac Chief AI Innovation Office.
Importantly, you be joining the Data, Digital & AI (DDAI) function that defines and executes the data, digital, and AI strategy—partnering with business leaders to unlock value through advanced analytics, responsible AI, and modern digital platforms.
The core focus is Engineering AI systems, and we are looking for passionate, commercially astute AI Engineers that can build, integrate, and operationalise AI capabilities into real products, services, and internal platforms.
We are keen to learn about your AI Engineering skills that combine strong software engineering foundations with practical experience applying machine learning and large language models (LLMs) in real-world enterprise environments.
Key Responsibilities –
- Design and build AI-powered applications, services, agents, and internal developer tools.
- Integrate foundation models, ML models, retrieval systems, vector stores, and AI services into production workflows.
- Implement pipelines for prompt management, model invocation, tool calling, grounding, and output validation.
- Engineer production-ready APIs, backend services, and system integrations that support AI use cases.
- Implement guardrails for security, privacy, compliance, and responsible AI.
- Build testing, evaluation, monitoring, and feedback loops for quality, performance, safety, and cost.
- Optimise latency, reliability, and cost across AI workloads.
- Collaborate with product, data, risk, security, and platform teams to clarify requirements, surface trade-offs, and align priorities for delivery.
- Apply structured problem-solving and root-cause analysis to diagnose issues (quality, grounding, safety, performance) and drive pragmatic fixes.
- Contribute reusable patterns, templates, and documentation to accelerate safe GenAI adoption across teams.
Essential Ingredients …
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant Technology discipline.
- Ability to deal effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels.
- Strong software engineering background in backend development and APIs.
- Hands-on experience building applications with LLMs or other AI/ML models.
- Familiarity with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), embeddings, vector databases, and orchestration patterns.
- Understanding of cloud platforms, CI/CD, testing, and observability.
- Awareness of evaluation methods, prompt design, and human-in-the-loop controls.
- Ability to balance experimentation speed with engineering quality and safety.
- Comfortable working with diverse stakeholders to triage requests, communicate constraints, and prioritise work based on impact and risk.
