We currently employ more than 2,500 people across 14 sites in Australia and three international locations and have a range of opportunities available as we plan for future growth.

The opportunity

We are seeking a capable engineer or analyst to join the Data Analytics team in Digital Engineering. Our team plays a critical role in delivering data driven insights and scalable data solutions to support key Defence objectives. With an initial focus on establishing reliable data flows into the data warehouse, this role will also contribute across the full data analytics lifecycle, from stakeholder engagement through to delivery of impactful visualisations and AI ready data products. The role offers technical mentoring within a supportive team, and opportunities to progress into advanced analytics, AI enablement and broader platform engineering activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to understand data needs and deliver insights and fit for purpose data solutions.
  • Undertake data wrangling, extraction, transformation and loading utilising Python and SQL.
  • Develop and maintain reliable data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes in Apache Airflow that connect large datasets from a variety of structured and unstructured sources.
  • Utilise dbt for data modelling and transformation.
  • Support development and maintenance of data platform infrastructure, including data warehouses, data lakes and, where required, data access APIs.
  • Build visualisations in Tableau.
  • Develop data applications in Python/HTML/CSS.
  • Work with stakeholders to define requirements, support delivery, and promote data standards, reuse, scalability, stability and operational efficiency.
  • Contribute to automation and CI/CD practices to improve scalability, repeatability and reliability of data and analytics solutions.

Experience/Qualifications

Essential:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field (e.g., Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics) or equivalent industry experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in Python.
  • Ability to work with SQL (knowledge will be valued; training will be provided).
  • Understanding of data modelling principles.
  • Experience or strong interest in building and maintaining data pipelines and transforming data from multiple sources.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver high quality data products.
  • Strong problem solving skills and attention to data quality, reliability and documentation.

Desirable:

  • Defence and/or Aerospace domain knowledge.
  • Experience with dbt modelling and Apache Airflow.
  • Familiarity with MLOps and CI/CD practices.
  • Experience with Tableau.
  • Experience with Docker.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Experience with data warehousing, data lakes, or data platform infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with data quality monitoring, observability and pipeline testing practices.
  • Understanding of security, governance and access control considerations in enterprise data environments.
  • Analytical aptitude demonstrated through previous projects.
