The Role

The Azure AI Specialist will modernise business processes and digital services by designing, enhancing, and supporting PowerApps and other custom apps using Power platform and Azure services and building and supporting automated workflows, reducing reliance on manual and paper based processes while improving workflow efficiency, records management, audit readiness, and information security. They will enable flexible, resilient ways of working through secure use of Microsoft 365 and Azure platforms, including SharePoint and Teams governance uplift, external sharing and access controls, data migration to cloud platforms, and training and knowledge sharing initiatives that support modern, collaborative, and hybrid work practices.

The Digital Workplace and Cloud Platforms team delivers and supports secure, modern digital services across DJSIR. We provide enduser and application support, manage and govern Microsoft 365 and Power Platform environments, and deliver data, automation and AI enabled solutions. The team focuses on improving reliability, security and usability of platforms such as SharePoint, Teams, Power BI, Power Apps and Copilot, while partnering closely with business areas to streamline processes, reduce manual effort and enable data driven decision-making.

Main accountabilities:

  • Design, develop and deliver Azure AI and Generative AI solutions that meet business requirements and comply with Victorian Government standards, policies and security controls.
  • Provide specialist technical expertise and advice on AI architecture, including retrieval augmented generation (RAG), search and knowledgebased solutions.
  • Apply responsible AI, privacy, accessibility and cyber security principles in the design and development of AI solutions.
  • Implement and maintain Continuous Integrations and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, infrastructure as code and Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) practices to ensure reliable, repeatable and secure AI delivery.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions and provide clear documentation, demonstrations and guidance.
  • Monitor, support and continuously improve AI services in production, including performance, cost optimisation, reliability and risk management.

The Team

The position of Azure AI Specialist forms part of the Information Technology & Workplace Services branch, which sits within the Corporate Services group. The Corporate Services group consists of specialist functions including finance, investment and procurement, performance and governance, legal and legislation, people and culture, information technology and workplace services and emergency management. These functions enable the department to operate efficiently and effectively and support the Secretary and Ministers to meet legislative obligations and responsibilities whilst actively supporting the department's portfolio groups and Ministers to create the conditions for growing Victoria's prosperity, building the productive capacity of our economy, and increasing participation. The group works to build a safe, high-performing organisation where the department's people are supported to perform at their best. The group does this by providing strategic, operational and program delivery support services in creative and innovative ways.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have the following main skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing and delivering AI or Generative AI solutions using Microsoft Azure technologies in a production environment.
  • Strong software engineering capability, including Python and/or .NET development, API design & integration.
  • Experience implementing search based or data driven AI solutions, including integration with structured and unstructured data sources. Experience with OCR, document intelligence patterns, or orchestrating agent AI workflows.
  • Sound knowledge of cloud security, identity and data protection principles, and the ability to apply them in Azure based solutions.
  • Understanding of responsible AI principles, including privacy, fairness, transparency and risk management, and the ability to apply these practices in a government context.
  • Well-developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to nontechnical audiences.
