You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.

The Opportunity

WSP Digital is the digital consulting and solutions division of WSP. We are global innovators and leaders in the integrated development and use of software to enhance our customers' engineering, infrastructure, building, and environmental projects

We are immediately looking to hire a Senior Data Scientist to grow our team across Australia.

You will be responsible for identifying, prioritising, and solving complex engineering business problems by developing advanced statistical and analytical modelling techniques, including Machine Learning, predictive models, discrete event simulation, and constrained optimisation. As well as developing data pipelines to operationalise the models into business-as-usual practice.

What will you be doing?
  • You'll be working with a range of government and commercial clients to enhance the operation and maintenance of many critical infrastructure systems that keep our world moving. Many of our clients operate large-scale, network-based systems such as road, rail, and water supply networks, with tangible outcomes that affect us all.
  • Work with clients to understand their needs and devise novel solutions and winning work.
  • Provide technical leadership and solution designs for junior data scientists to implement.
  • Collaborate with other engineering and digital disciplines, such as Digital Engineering and Location Intelligence, to deliver complex multi-disciplinary projects across various engineering fields.
  • Anticipate, characterise, and manage complex real-world data. Find effective workarounds or mitigations to deliver successful outcomes.
  • Gain experience in taking corrective action and making tough decisions to recover or successfully implement projects.
  • Work with massive and complex data sets from multiple sources, utilising big data tools and distributed processing.
  • Perform deep-dive analyses of experiments through reliable modelling methods that include numerous explanatory variables and covariates.
  • Translate analytical insights into concrete, actionable recommendations for business, process, or product improvements.
  • Make recommendations for the collection of new data or the refinement of existing data sources and storage.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to deliver and solve real-world engineering problems with ML and data science.
  • Collaborate across the business to influence change and bring ideas to life.
  • Create solutions that will benefit the wider community.
  • Contribute to creating a more sustainable future.
What we'll love about you
  •  6+ years of experience in a data science environment (experience may be a mix of corporate, industry research, government or academic)
  • Ability to ideate and set vision and scope for complex data-driven projects, including a deep understanding of client value proposition and stakeholder needs
  • Understanding of core data science, machine learning and statistical concepts and methods
  • Knowledge and experience in AWS and/or Azure.
  • Experience with Data Warehousing (Databricks, Snowflake etc.).
  • Ability to manipulate and analyse complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data and metadata from varying sources.
  • Passion for empirical research and for answering hard questions with data.
  • Proven history of successful client adoption and/or operationalisation of analytical and statistical tools
  • Expert knowledge of analytical tools and cloud data services
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relational/structured data manipulation, machine learning, and scientific statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of constrained optimisation and discrete event simulation techniques.
  • Ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis in a clear, precise, and actionable manner.
  • An analytical approach that allows for results at varying levels of precision.
  • Strong ability to mentor junior staff.
  • Solid understanding and experience with software engineering practice & principles.
  • Preference for Python-based software development experience
