Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced AI Engineer (Agentic AI and Advanced Analytics) to join the Digital Health division.

Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne's rapidly growing outer north.

Services are provided through our six main campuses: Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospitals Centres and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Mernda and Coburg.

About the Role:

The AI Engineer is responsible for delivering modern artificial intelligence capabilities that improve speed, efficiency, quality and decision-making across Northern Health.

The role provides specialist expertise in data science, large language models (LLMs), agentic AI systems, machine learning, analytics and software engineering to design, build and deploy scalable digital health solutions.

The position supports the Associate Director, Digital Innovation and Research to rapidly identify opportunities, prototype solutions and operationalise AI products that create measurable clinical, operational and financial value across Northern Health.

The role will help transition the organisation from traditional predictive machine learning approaches toward contemporary generative AI, intelligent automation, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), AI copilots, and multi-agent workflows.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI, or related field.
  • Proven experience in AI, machine learning, and data analytics.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R; experience with SQL and relational databases.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, APIs, and modern data technologies.
  • Skilled in developing, testing, and deploying AI, analytics, or digital solutions.
  • Knowledge of ML, statistical modeling, data visualization, LLMs, generative AI, and prompt engineering.
  • Understanding of software development practices (source control, testing, documentation).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills; able to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate with technical and business stakeholders.
