Salary: Base $129,464 - $142,665 per annum + Superannuation

Division: This role sits within the NSW Fair Trading Division in the Data and Analytics team.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within NSW Fair Trading for a Senior Data Scientist. We are looking for someone passionate about using data science to improve regulatory decision-making and public outcomes. You'll turn data into insights that drive evidence-based approaches to compliance, risk, and service delivery.

Be Part of the Future of Fair Trading.

NSW Fair Trading is working to ensure safe marketplaces for goods, services and homes in NSW. At NSW Fair Trading, we've been on an exciting journey of transformation — reimagining how we deliver for the people and communities of NSW. Through our recent organisational realignment, we've built a new operating model designed to put customers at the centre of everything we do, strengthen our regulatory impact, and enable our people to thrive.

We're creating a more modern, responsive and risk-based Fair Trading — one that understands the needs of people and businesses, embraces collaboration and innovation, and delivers better outcomes across the rental, strata, property and consumer markets we serve.

This next phase brings new and exciting opportunities to join us in shaping "the new way" — where you can help design smarter regulation, improve customer experiences, and make a real difference for the people of NSW.

If you're someone who:

  • Thinks deeply about the needs of people and communities
  • Is motivated by great outcomes, not just processes, and
  • Wants to be part of an organisation that's transforming how regulation works

…then there's a place for you in our future.

Join us as we build a Fair Trading that's fit for the future — one that's customer-centred, evidence-driven, and proudly focused on public value.

About the Role

What you'll do

  • Design and execute experiments to improve compliance outcomes, using any combination of appropriate methodologies and technologies, including traditional machine learning techniques, statistical analysis, graph analysis, and transformer type models.
  • Build data-driven tools and automations to deliver operational efficiencies, including by automating summarisation and classification tasks in workflows and integrating datasets to improve access to information.
  • Design, build, deploy, and continuously enhance AI/ML models to improve regulatory risk identification, compliance efficiency, and business process optimisation.
  • Conduct in-depth statistical analysis to uncover emerging regulatory risks and trends, supporting strategic planning, policy development, investigations, and compliance operations
  • Develop robust data pipelines to facilitate seamless ingestion, cleaning, and transformation of datasets, ensuring reliable and accessible data for data science products.
  • Manage relationships with key business stakeholders to understand their needs, prioritise initiatives, and iterate solutions, ensuring sustained alignment with organisational objectives.
  • Design and implement graph analytics solutions that identify, visualise, and assess connections between actors, events, and objects, enhancing regulatory compliance insights.
  • Lead the development of advanced solutions for analysing unstructured data, integrating text, image, and other complex formats into data science products to improve analytical depth.
  • Partner with policy, compliance, and ICT teams to embed data science into operations.
  • Communicate findings clearly to non-technical audiences and senior leaders.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Data science expertise – experience applying statistical or machine learning methods to solve business problems.
  • Technical capability – proficiency in Python, R, SQL, and data visualisation tools.
  • Collaboration – ability to partner effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strategic mindset – focus on practical, scalable solutions to complex challenges.
  • Communication – capacity to explain technical concepts to varied stakeholders.

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrated experience delivering analytical or data science solutions in a complex environment.
  • Strong technical and statistical skills using modern programming and visualisation tools.
  • Understanding of data governance, ethics, and privacy principles.
  • Tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent experience in data science, statistics, or a related discipline.

Salary

Grade 9/10, with the base salary for this role starting at $129,464 base plus superannuation
