About the Role

The Australian Research Council's Special Research Initiative, Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future (SAEF) is a leading international research program delivering interdisciplinary research to forecast environmental change across the Antarctic region, develop effective environmental stewardship strategies, and secure Antarctica as a natural reserve devoted to peace and science.

With more than $46M in investment from the ARC and contributing organisations, SAEF brings together experts in informatics, robotics, environmental technologies, decision science and Antarctic ecology. Strong partnerships with key Antarctic stakeholders ensure our research directly informs policy and operational decision-making and supports the next generation of environmental leaders.

We are seeking a Software Engineer at Level A or B to deliver high quality research, developing methods, models and software solutions for embedded AI, swarming drones, AIoT and other autonomous systems used to monitor vegetation responses to environmental change in Antarctica.

In this role, you will design and implement innovative software, methods and systems that enable AI at the edge for remote environmental monitoring. Working within SAEF's multidisciplinary research program, you will help advance smart sensing platforms, autonomous drones and other field deployable technologies that support SAEF and Robinson Laureate research goals.

You will contribute to independent and collaborative research leading to high quality publications and presentations, while building strong relationships with colleagues, scientific partners and industry collaborators. The role also offers opportunities to support student supervision and participate in project and departmental activities that foster a collaborative research environment.

About You

You will bring a strong foundation in computer science, robotics, electrical engineering or a related discipline, supported by a completed PhD and a demonstrated track record of research excellence. Your expertise spans AI, robotics and the Internet of Things, with hands on experience in embedded computing and environmental or monitoring systems. You communicate clearly and effectively, manage projects with confidence, and work collaboratively within diverse, multidisciplinary teams.

You are committed to safe, inclusive and equitable work practices, and you demonstrate cultural respect and awareness in all professional interactions. Your approach to research is proactive, organised and collegial, and you value the opportunity to contribute to a positive and supportive research culture.

In addition, candidates applying at Level B will demonstrate:

  • Post doctoral experience in computer science, robotics, electrical engineering or a related field
  • Successful supervision of Honours or HDR students, or experience leading a research team
  • Experience contributing to competitive grant applications
