Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a Senior Research Engineer (Robotic Vision & Autonomous Systems) to join Office of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research), Academic Division.

The Senior Research Engineer (Robotics and Autonomous Systems) is skilled in both hardware and software robotic implementations. The role will involve designing and delivering systems in domains such as computer vision, artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning, and will support robotic field trials and data collection. An important component of the role is to coordinate and support a broad range of research activities within the robotics and autonomous systems domain. This position works within a ten-person engineering team, operating under broad direction with minimal supervision, and will require the ability to work independently, while applying a high level of judgement. The Senior Research Engineer (Robotics and Autonomous Systems) will be part of Research Engineering Facilities (REF) of Research Infrastructure group of QUT. The role supports the QUT and QUT Centre for Robotics' core research activities, and takes a lead in creating demonstrations for, and working with, industry. We are looking for someone who likes building things and can integrate systems to help develop both robotic and perception platforms.

We're offering this role as a hybrid position as part of QUT's commitment to embracing the opportunities created by a more virtual and connected world.

About us

QUT is a major Australian university with a global outlook and a 'real world' focus. We are an ambitious and collaborative institution that seeks to equip our students and graduates with the skills they will need in an increasingly disrupted and challenged world.

QUT has experienced the strongest, sustained research growth of any university in the sector over the last ten years. The scale and complexity of research at QUT has reached a level that requires enhanced processes and resources to support the University's research community in meeting its aspirations and compliance obligations. Research Infrastructure (RI) delivers coordinated University-wide research infrastructure capabilities through distinct research facilities. In collaboration with internal and external partners, the unit acquires, facilitates access to, develops, and manages world-class research infrastructure capabilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the design and delivery of robotics through:
    • Programming experience in C or C++ language, under a Linux environment.
    • Demonstrated software and hardware integration skills including knowledge and experience in complex system integration, such as embedded computers, GNSS/INS systems, RGB-D cameras, LiDAR, radar, IR/hyperspectral cameras, and other sensors.
    • Understanding and experience with development of electrical wiring diagrams, schematics and installation drawings.
    • Knowledge or experience of Robot Operating System (ROS), tools for training and using deep learning algorithms and in image processing and computer vision algorithms and solutions using open-source software packages such as OpenCV, as well as machine learning libraries and packages such as PyTorch, TensorFlow and Caffe.
    • Programming experience in Python or MATLAB.
  • Sound knowledge of systems and software engineering principles and software development paradigms including software revision control approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative and novel solutions to adhere to continuous improvement and/or transformational change.
