The Role

As the Discipline Leader Platform Digital Preparedness, you will nurture, lead and be responsible for a multidisciplinary team, comprising APS staff, embedded contractors, industry and collaborative academic partners.

Your role will be to undertake and deliver innovative research outcomes, and transition them into Defence. Activities will primarily be in the areas of Natural Language Processing, AI/ML, AR/VR to enhance the Agility, preparedness and resilience of ADF platforms.

The Discipline Leader will:

  • Provide scientific leadership to research and anticipate and prepare for future S&T needs in support of asymmetric Defence capabilities;
  • Establish collaborative opportunities within the broader S&T enterprise on priority areas for Defence, building relationships with internal and external partners across academia, industry and Government.
  • Supervise, develop and mentor staff; and provide leadership in promoting a culture of inclusiveness, collaboration and open communication;
  • Manage activities through program planning, budget preparation, reporting, and developing and maintaining effective stakeholder relationships.
  • Contribute into the leading and shaping of S&T capabilities.

This role requires a candidate with a deep understanding of the latest research in the areas of Natural Language Processing, AI/ML, and AR/VR, as well as experience leading and managing multi-disciplinary teams. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are also essential, as the role involves building relationships and working closely with a variety of internal and external partners.

The Discipline Leader Platform Digital Preparedness will be responsible for supporting and developing a diverse team of researchers within the Platform Digital Preparedness Discipline and play a key role in collaborating closely with ADF, industry, and academic partners to form a wider team that delivers results aligned with Defence priorities.

The Platform Digital Preparedness Discipline is part of the Machine Dynamics Digital and Fuels Sciences directorate, which supports the preparedness, agility, and operation of ADF platforms across the Maritime, Air, and Land domains. The Discipline consists of a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists who work closely with stakeholders in ADF, industry, and academia to apply modern digital tools to the operations of fleets.
