About You

As a Data Scientist in RMIT's Data & Analytics team, you'll work across a range of complex enterprise datasets to deliver insights, models and data products that support decision‑making across the university. You'll contribute to the development and enhancement of analytics solutions already in production, including products that use large language models (LLMs), semantic search and curated data, while also partnering with stakeholders to explore new use cases and opportunities.

This role involves working end‑to‑end, from understanding business problems through to building, testing and improving models, dashboards and data pipelines that are actively used.

This role suits a hands‑on data scientist with strong SQL skills and experience working in Snowflake or similar cloud data platforms, alongside exposure to dbt and Git‑based version control. You'll be confident using Python or R (expertise in one is sufficient), and have solid foundations in statistics, machine learning and model evaluation. Experience working with text‑heavy or unstructured data, analytics products, or modern AI‑enabled platforms will be highly regarded.

We're looking for someone who can work independently, adapt across different problem domains, communicate clearly with non‑technical stakeholders, and apply good software engineering and data science practices to deliver practical, scalable solutions.

To be successful in this position, you'll have:

  • Knowledge of a variety of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques (regression, statistical tests, text mining, decision tree learning etc), how to apply these techniques to solve real-world business problems, and an understanding of how to evaluate the performance of models
  • Good programming skills, is able to manipulate structured and non-structured data in distributed environments. Is experienced at building model using tools and libraries but also in creating bespoke new algorithms
  • Advanced knowledge of analytics tools used for data science e.g. SQL, Python, R, AWS Sagemaker
  • Exposure to agent‑based or tool‑augmented LLM workflows
  • Working knowledge of Snowflake for querying and using curated data
  • Foundational knowledge of dbt for data transformation and analytics engineering
  • Basic experience with Git and version-controlled workflows

Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children and National Police Check.
