About the role

The Lead AI Engineer plays a pivotal role in building and scaling Tyro’s Data & AI Platform - the foundation that powers analytics, vmachine learning, and emerging AI-driven capabilities across the
organisation.

The Lead AI Engineer will define how AI is built, operated, and governed at Tyro. It will design Tyro’s AI platform, establish AI Ops practices, and enable teams to safely deliver AI use cases
such as chatbots, copilots, decision support, and automation.

Working under the guidance of the Data & AI Platform Manager, this role contributes to Tyro’s mission of becoming a data- and AI-enabled organisation.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. This role will build core capabilities, set standards, and work closely with engineers, architects, and domain experts to ensure AI solutions are
reliable, secure, and fit for a highly regulated payments environment.

What you'll do

Core Platform Engineering

  • Design and evolve Tyro’s AI platform using agent-based architectures on AWS and Snowflake.

  • Define reusable patterns for LLM usage, agent orchestration, tool invocation, and system integration.

  • Establish AI Ops practices that support safe iteration, including versioning, evaluation, monitoring, and controlled rollout.

  • Build observability into AI systems, tracking quality, latency, reliability, and cost.

  • Embed responsible AI principles, security controls, and governance aligned to Tyro’s regulatory obligations.

  • Build backend AI services using Python and/or TypeScript, applying strong software engineering practices.

  • Set technical standards and mentor ML and AI engineers.

  • Collaborate closely with Domain Principal Engineers and Solution Architects to deliver AI use cases
    across the business

What are the main duties this position is expected to perform?

AI Enablement and Experimentation

  • Collaborate with Product teams to operationalise machine learning and generative AI models.

  • Develop reliable data foundations and features to support LLMs, agentic systems, and advanced AI experimentation.

  • Contribute to data governance frameworks that enable safe and efficient deployment of AI solutions.

  • Design and maintain reusable AI platform patterns (e.g. training, inference, feature access, deployment).

  • Build and evolve paths, templates, and reference implementations that accelerate safe AI adoption by delivery teams.

  • Enable application and product teams to deploy AI capabilities independently, within defined guardrails.

  • Partner with Cloud Enablement and Architecture teams to ensure AI workloads align to approved infrastructure and security standards.

Collaboration and Delivery

  • Work in cross-functional squads to understand analytical, reporting, and Data and AI-related needs.

  • Build data products, dashboards, and APIs that democratise access to trusted data and insights across Finance, Risk, Product, and other teams.

  • Collaborate with engineers and platform managers to continuously improve the scalability and security of Tyro’s data ecosystem.

Quality, Security, and Governance

  • Uphold high standards for data quality, observability, and compliance with APRA, PCI-DSS, and Responsible AI principles.

  • Implement automated testing, version control, and security best practices for all data systems.

What you'll bring

  • Strong software engineering background (typically 5–8+ years).

  • Hands-on experience building and operating cloud-native systems on AWS.

  • Practical experience with LLMs, generative AI, agentic systems, or applied ML.

  • Experience designing production-grade, observable systems.

  • Comfort working in regulated or high-trust environments where correctness and safety matter.

  • Strong experience with cloud-based data platforms and DevOps practices (AWS, ECS, S3, Lambda, SageMaker, Glue).

  • Strong software engineering foundations - particularly in Python, Scala, Java, or Kotlin - with a focus on testing, performance, and security. Demonstrated ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams to deliver impactful data and AI solutions.

  • Deep curiosity and passion for AI, machine learning, and data-driven innovation.

  • Experience operationalising machine learning models or AI services in production environments.

  • Familiarity with MLOps tooling, feature stores, or vector databases.

  • Understanding of data governance, ethical AI, and responsible data use in regulated industries

  • Experience designing developer enablement platforms, internal tooling, or reusable engineering frameworks is highly regarded.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Amazon Bedrock or managed LLM platforms.

  • Experience building internal platforms or shared capabilities.

  • Familiarity with AI evaluation, monitoring, and cost optimisation.

  • Exposure to payments, banking, or fintech.
