This role sits within the NSW Fair Trading Division in the Regulatory Intelligence and Data team

An exciting opportunity has arisen within NSW Fair Trading for a Principal Regulatory Data Scientist.

Be Part of the Future of Fair Trading

At NSW Fair Trading, we've been on an exciting journey of transformation — reimagining how we deliver for the people and communities of NSW. Through our recent organisational realignment, we've built a new operating model designed to put customers at the centre of everything we do, strengthen our regulatory impact, and enable our people to thrive.

We're creating a more modern, responsive and risk-based Fair Trading — one that understands the needs of people and businesses, embraces collaboration and innovation, and delivers better outcomes across the rental, strata, property and consumer markets we serve.

This next phase brings new and exciting opportunities to join us in shaping "the new way" — where you can help design smarter regulation, improve customer experiences, and make a real difference for the people of NSW.

If you're someone who:

  • Thinks deeply about the needs of people and communities,
  • Is motivated by great outcomes, not just processes, and
  • Wants to be part of an organisation that's transforming how regulation works —

…then there's a place for you in our future.

Join us as we build a Fair Trading that's fit for the future — one that's customer-centred, evidence-driven, and proudly focused on public value.

About the Role

As the Principal Regulatory Data Scientist, you will lead advanced data science and analytical initiatives that inform regulatory strategy, identify emerging risks, and improve decision-making across Fair Trading. You will use innovative data science techniques, including machine learning and predictive modelling, to enhance regulatory intelligence and support evidence-based policy and operational delivery.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Lead complex data science projects that inform regulatory strategy and improve public outcomes.
  • Design and implement advanced analytics, predictive models, and machine learning tools to detect patterns and risks.
  • Collaborate with policy, operations, and ICT teams to translate data insights into actionable strategies.
  • Provide expert advice on data science methodologies, governance, and best practice.
  • Mentor and develop data professionals, building analytical capability across the organisation.
  • Contribute to the design of data infrastructure and ensure responsible use of AI and data ethics in regulatory practice.

About the Team

This role sits within NSW Fair Trading's Regulatory Intelligence and Data team. The team applies analytics and data science to strengthen regulatory effectiveness, enhance customer protection, and support proactive compliance. It partners across the organisation to develop insights, models, and evidence that inform policy and operational priorities.

About You

We are seeking an experienced and innovative data leader who:

  • Has demonstrated expertise in data science, analytics, or AI, particularly in government or regulatory contexts.
  • Possesses strong technical proficiency in statistical modelling, programming (e.g. Python, R), and data visualisation.
  • Understands how to apply advanced analytics to inform strategy, risk management, and decision-making.
  • Communicates complex insights clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Holds relevant tertiary qualifications in data science, statistics, computer science, or a related field.

When Applying

Provide a cover letter and resume (maximum 5 pages) that outline your experience and how you meet the role's key capabilities.

Please be advise that the position is advertised as Senior Data Engineer, however the internal Role Description (RD) and Job Title is currently titled Senior Data Developer.

Salary Grade 11/12, with the base salary for this role starting at $149,739 base plus superannuation
