This role will provide you with an exciting opportunity to join the Service Planning Analytics and Insights team where you can influence key areas of planning for the NSW Health system.

We are seeking a high-performing individual to join the Service Planning Analytics and Insights unit. We are a team who collaborate with Local Health Districts, Specialty Health Networks, other Ministry of Health teams and NSW Health entities in relation to statewide service planning, to support the achievement of NSW Health's service planning and reform objectives.

As the Lead Data Scientist you will apply superior data science and statistical modelling techniques, tools and processes to unique health data. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and be responsible for investigative analytics work, structured statistical model building and the associated data engineering pipeline and platform for key enterprise solutions for NSW Health.

Qualifications in Data Science/Data Analytics, Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics along with previous experience in health data, linked data sets and population health data and analysis would be considered advantageous for this role.

Crown Clerk 11/12, starting salary from $149,739 to $173,174 plus Super and annual leave loading, with a 35-hour work week, work location- 1 Reserve Road, St Leonards

What you'll be doing

  • Leading sophisticated data science initiatives and a small team of data scientists you will be establishing algorithms to address business needs relating to health service planning and establishing and maintaining best data science practices.
  • Providing expert advice to inform data modelling approaches and lead the coordination and creation of algorithms, managing model risk engagement, identify and adjust algorithmic model as needed to ensure algorithm is up-to-date, reliable, and use the latest methods.
  • Interpret output derived from algorithms generated and understand the assumptions and limitations of modelled outputs and presenting outcomes to key stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Ministry stakeholders as well as biostatisticians, data analysts, health planners and health researchers involved in health service planning, monitoring and evaluating health services and health system innovation.

About you

We are seeking motivated and committed individuals who can support the work of NSW Health with:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and / or relevant experience in Data Science, Data Analytics, Actuarial, Mathematics, and Statistics. Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and openness to explore new analytics techniques and data engineering principles and tools is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a data science team and generating algorithmic models using a range of analytics methodologies, ideally including predictive modelling (e.g. Dynamic Simulation Modelling, Generalised Linear Model regression, discriminant analysis, or similar) and associated coding skills in SQL, R and/or Python.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting and interpreting statistical analyses of population-based health, administrative or other health related data, using a range of analytic tools and methodologies
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and consultation skills, both inter- and intra-agency. This includes demonstrated experience in preparing written reports and presentations for a variety of audiences.
