Create your best future and join Westpac as an AI Data Scientist. This role will play a crucial part of the UNITE Business Design and Delivery team. UNITE is our business-led, tech-enabled transformation, and a key priority for the Group. UNITE is about delivering 'one best way' to make our processes, systems and tech simpler so we can deliver a better experience for our banker assisted customers and thereby make things easier for our people.

Location: Sydney-based role only

On-site Requirement: 3 days in the office per week

Why On-site? This is a highly collaborative position involving regular face-to-face workshops and close team interaction, making in-office presence essential.

What's the role?

As the AI Data Scientist you will be joining a dynamic team delivering digital, data and AI powered solutions to bankers and customers. You will support the continued evolution of Digital Banker and customer appointment experiences across Retail and Business & Wealth and combine AI‑powered data science with strong business understanding to drive large‑scale change across customer‑facing teams.

Sitting within a high‑impact team in the Digital Village, you will act as a subject matter expert delivering trusted, scalable data and analytics solutions. You will work closely with product, technology, UX, and risk stakeholders to ensure data‑led solutions are practical, compliant, and aligned to real customer and banker needs.

Additionally, you will lead data delivery across multiple squads, using your expertise in data science to support key decisions, improve customer experience, and visualise insights that drive adoption and change. You will use AI to automate data queries and curate meaningful insights for feature design, pre‑ and post‑production feedback loops, and banker automation to enable higher‑quality conversations.

You will extract and analyse large datasets, perform end‑to‑end customer journey deep‑dive analysis, and develop predictive models to identify process improvement opportunities. You will also help automate, optimise, or eliminate manual processes, deliver intuitive reporting solutions, and translate complex insights into clear, risk‑aware recommendations for senior stakeholders, supporting consistent and compliant customer journeys across channels.

What do I need?

  • Strong experience in data science, analytics, or applied data roles, preferably within banking, financial services, or customer‑facing industries.
  • Proven ability to work with customer data, business rules, and decision logic to support data‑driven outcomes supported by AI automated intelligence.
  • Hands‑on experience using AI tools (e.g. Claude AI, GitHub Copilot, Encode AI or similar) to support data engineering, automation, or insight generation.
  • Ability to translate data and insights into consumable outputs through tools such as Power BI and UX‑friendly data solutions.
  • Experience collaborating within agile, cross‑functional delivery teams.
  • Enjoy planning and prioritising your work across multiple demanding areas to deliver against highest need.
  • Confidence engaging with product, technology, UX, and risk stakeholders.
  • Strong ability to balance customer experience, compliance requirements, and pragmatic delivery.
