Help build the future at the intersection of medicine, law and AI.

MEDirect is a market-leading Australian scale-up, and we’re building Report Studio — our AI-powered medico-legal report assistant.

We’re looking for an AI Engineer to help shape the next phase of our platform as we scale. This is a full-time remote role with a competitive salary package on offer. You’ll work on applied AI in a live production environment, building real capability across document intelligence, retrieval, transcription, workflow automation, and report generation.

If you want to work on meaningful AI problems in a high-trust, high-complexity environment — and see your work quickly translate into real product impact — this is a standout opportunity.

About the Role

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone with strong applied AI capability and the judgment to turn modern AI tooling into production-ready product features.

You’ll work across our AI services layer, designing and improving retrieval-augmented generation pipelines, agentic workflows, and document intelligence capabilities that integrate into our FastAPI backend and Azure environment. This is applied AI engineering, not research.

You will report to Andy Waugh, Technical Director, and work closely with product, platform, and engineering stakeholders across the business.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Build, optimise, and maintain RAG pipelines using LangChain and LangGraph

  • Design chunking, classification, and embedding strategies for complex medico-legal documents

  • Develop LLM-powered workflows for report synthesis, assessment support, and operational automation

  • Integrate with Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search, OCR services, and reranking tools

  • Define clean API contracts between AI services and the broader platform

  • Improve retrieval quality, output accuracy, and system reliability

  • Contribute to testing, documentation, and engineering standards for AI components

  • Work with sensitive data in a privacy-conscious environment, including PII detection and redaction patterns

What You’ll Bring
  • Around 2–3 years of hands-on experience in applied AI, machine learning, or LLM-based product development

  • Practical experience with LangChain and/or LangGraph in real-world projects

  • Strong Python capability and exposure to FastAPI or similar frameworks

  • Solid understanding of embeddings, vector stores, chunking strategy, and retrieval evaluation

  • Awareness of common RAG failure modes, including hallucination, weak retrieval, and context overload

  • Experience building production-oriented components that other engineers can use and extend

  • Familiarity with Azure AI services such as Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search, or related tools

  • Strong systems thinking, initiative, and a practical delivery mindset

Nice to Have
  • Experience with Whisper or other ASR/transcription pipelines

  • Exposure to layout-aware document processing or tools such as LayoutLM

  • Familiarity with Azure Durable Functions or event-driven architecture

  • Experience working with sensitive, regulated, or privacy-critical datasets
