Better and fairer care. Always.

St Vincent's has been a leader in Australia's health and aged care landscape for more than 165 years. Since our founders, the Sisters of Charity, opened our first hospital in 1857, our services and nearly 30,000 people have been behind some of Australia's most important medical breakthroughs. We are a microcosm of Australia's health and aged care system and are uniquely positioned to lead and respond to our rapidly changing environment.

We are looking for a special kind of person - a St Vincent's kind of person. Someone who puts excellence, compassion, connection and caring for other people at the heart of everything they do.

Are you a hands-on, strategic Senior AI Architect & Developer ready to lead the future of Artificial Intelligence in a mission-driven healthcare environment? Join St Vincent's Health Australia (SVHA), a non-profit health organisation renowned for exceptional, compassionate care and industry-leading research.

You will be the lead technical authority for AI, translating ambitious ideas into tangible, governed, and impactful tools that enable remote patient monitoring, predictive care models, and intelligent clinical decision support-bringing hospital-grade care safely into patients' homes while reducing administrative burden on our 30,000 staff.

This is a foundational leadership role with significant growth potential. As SVHA's AI delivery capabilities mature over the next 3 years, this role will evolve from hands-on technical architect to strategic AI leader.

Role Impact: Accelerating AI Adoption Safely

This role is the core technical engine of SVHA's AI ambitions across Generative AI, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, and predictive analytics. You will act as the critical bridge between frontline clinical/operational challenges and enterprise-grade, production-ready solutions that enable our radical shift from hospital-centric to home-centric care delivery.

Your impact will be the safe, rapid acceleration of our AI adoption journey-directly enabling the transformation of healthcare delivery models that will define the future of Australian healthcare.

This is not just about building AI models; it's about fundamentally reimagining how care is delivered, monitored, and optimized when the hospital walls disappear and the patient's home becomes the primary care setting. You will architect the AI capabilities that make virtual wards safe, predictive deterioration detection possible, and remote care coordination seamless across our federated ministry spanning public hospitals, private hospitals, aged care, and virtual health services.

The right candidate will grow alongside our AI maturity journey, shaping not just the technical architecture but the entire operating model, team structure, and strategic direction. This is a rare opportunity to build something from the ground up within a nationally significant healthcare organization, with the autonomy, resources, and executive support to make it succeed.

Key Accountabilities:

Managing Today

As the Senior AI Architect & Developer, you will be responsible for:

  • Strategic Vision: Own the multi-year AI technical roadmap, ensuring alignment with the EMR strategy, data platform capabilities, and the organisation's 2030 vision.
  • AI Architecture & Blueprint: Design and own the enterprise AI technical architecture, solutions, and technology standards that will serve as the secure foundation for all future AI development.
  • Hands-on Development: Lead the hands-on development, validation, and deployment lifecycle to translate complex clinical and operational problems into robust, production-ready AI solutions.
  • Vendor & Technology Assessment: Lead the technical evaluation and security assessment of all third-party AI vendor solutions, ensuring they are secure and fit-for-purpose.
  • Model Lifecycle Management: Implement and manage the full lifecycle of all production AI models, including continuous monitoring, performance tuning, and model retraining.
  • AI Acceleration: Develop and curate a library of reusable "AI Accelerators" (e.g., standard code libraries, solution patterns) to dramatically reduce the time-to-value for future projects.
  • Governance & Safety: Embed AI safety, ethics, and governance (from the AI Framework) into the technical design of every solution, ensuring all models are robust, explainable, and compliant with healthcare regulations and data privacy standards.

What You'll Bring

We are seeking a senior, hands-on technologist who is both an architect and a developer-a pragmatic problem-solver with deep, enterprise-level expertise in building and scaling secure AI/ML solutions.

Essential Experience and Skills

  • Experience: Demonstrated experience (10+ years) in data science, software engineering, or a related field, with at least 3+ years in a senior or architect-level role.
  • Hands-on experience building and deploying solutions using Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • AI/ML Expertise: Proven, hands-on experience in designing, building, and deploying enterprise-scale AI/ML models (e.g., NLP, computer vision, predictive analytics) from pilot to production.
  • MLOps Mastery: Deep experience in designing MLOps and DataOps pipelines for model training, versioning, deployment, and continuous monitoring.
  • Cloud & Programming: Extensive experience with a major cloud platform, preferably Microsoft Azure (e.g., Azure ML, Azure OpenAI Service, Azure Data Factory), and Expert-level programming skills (e.g., Python).
  • Architecture: Deep understanding of software architecture principles, API design, microservices, and containerisation (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Mindset: A "safety-first" and ethical mindset with a strong understanding of data privacy, security, and the principles of responsible AI.

Minimum Education Requirements

  • A post-graduate degree (Master's or PhD) in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.

Desirable

  • Experience working in the healthcare sector or another highly regulated industry.

If you are driven to achieve results , possess strong technical and analytical skills , and want to contribute to a workplace that is safe and promotes personal wellbeing, we encourage you to apply.
