Lead a portfolio of work focused on improving the learning and wellbeing outcomes of Victorian students, including through managing the risks and opportunities of Artificial Intelligence in teaching and learning. This is a full time fixed term role until 30 June 2028.

About the Department

The department provides a wide range of learning and development support and services. The department provides policy leadership, plans for the future of education in Victoria and leads key cross-sector collaboration. The department plays an important system steward role by providing support, guidance, oversight and assurance across early childhood and school education systems, as well as directly providing school education and 50 new early learning centres.

About the Division

The Curriculum and Teaching Practice Division (CTPD) is responsible for developing and supporting schools to implement the department's teaching and learning policies and providing curriculum implementation guidance to Victorian government schools. CTPD draws on contemporary research and practice evidence to develop evidence-based teaching and learning policy reforms, co-design and implement initiatives to support schools to deliver high-quality teaching programs. CTPD has primary responsibility for providing advice and implementation support to government schools to deliver the Victorian Curriculum.

CTPD currently has four branches:

  • Teaching and LearningResources
  • Curriculum and Professional Practice
  • Literacy and Languages
  • Mathematics, Science and Digital Learning

Across these branches, the key functions include:

  • Developing and communicating policies and guidance in areas such as curriculum planning, pedagogy, assessment and reporting, curriculum implementation (including languages education, Holocaust education, literacy instruction, mathematics and numeracy education), and artificial intelligence
  • Developing lesson plans and other classroom teaching and learning resources to support the implementation of departmental pedagogical settings and F-10 curriculum
  • Designing and delivering high-quality professional learning to build teachers' professional expertise in key pedagogical and curriculum areas
  • Developing and managing the Arc Platform and implementing high-quality teaching and learning software
  • Fostering student, family and community engagement through programs like the Premiers' Reading Challenge, Books in Prep Bags, and community language school

About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for a Manager, Artificial Intelligence in Schools to join the Mathematics, Science and Digital Learning Branch within the Department of Education on a full-time, fixed-term basis until 30 June 2028. The role will report to the Director, Mathematics, Science and Digital Learning Branch and work closely with the Manager, Digital Learning Policy and Practice.

The successful applicant will lead a portfolio of work focused on improving the learning and wellbeing outcomes of Victorian students, including through managing the risks and opportunities of Artificial Intelligence in teaching and learning. The successful applicant will bring strong leadership and strategic thinking skills, and the capacity to flexibly lead the design and delivery of creative and practical policy solutions aligned with department and Government directions for digital technologies.

They will oversee the development of policy, authoritative guidance and strategic advice, drawing on a detailed understanding of contemporary evidence about the impact of Artificial Intelligence on teaching, learning and school administration. Areas of work include protecting privacy and personal data, academic integrity, workload reduction, and ensuring use is appropriate and aligned with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0, including supporting practice, retrieval, application and consolidation of previously taught knowledge as students work towards mastery.

Attributes

The successful applicant will have strong interpersonal and collaboration skills. They will need to form strong relationships with colleagues in the Branch and with Information Management and Technology Division, and lead stakeholder engagement centrally and with Regions, with schools and with representative organisations.
