We support flexible working and are happy to discuss what this means for you.

See yourself in our team:

A role as Legal Counsel in the AI and Technology Legal team which is part of Legal & Group Secretariat (L&GS) has become available due to a long-standing team member taking on an internal secondment within L&GS.

L&GS is responsible for delivering an integrated and consistent approach to the Group's legal advice and corporate governance. L&GS partners with business and support units to assist them in attaining their strategic goals and sustaining a competitive advantage by leading efforts so that legal risks to the Group are appropriately recognised and managed. To do this, L&GS aligns with our business stakeholders, identifying and assisting them in managing legal risks in a clear manner, optimising the use of external counsel (where required).

The AI and Technology Legal team provides high value strategic advice to our internal clients to support and enhance the Group's competitive advantage in technology, business success and market value. Technology (the CBA IT and AI functions) is the AI and Technology Legal team's largest internal stakeholder. We also work closely with Group Procurement in support of Technology's ambition.

Joining on a 12 Month Contract, you will report to the Managing Counsel in the AI and Technology Legal team.

Do work that matters:

  • Advise key clients (with appropriate supervision where required) on: engagement of vendors and implementation of complex IT arrangements; and the impact of data protection and privacy laws on key IT initiatives within the Group.
  • Provide support in relation to the Group's M&A transactions, partnerships and joint ventures, including support for data segregation and commercialisation, IP and transition arrangements.
  • Demonstrate strong technical legal skills, including interpretation of legislation, drafting and negotiation of vendor agreements with a focus on technology providers, and contributing to draft submissions to regulators on emerging laws and issues (for example, privacy, and resilience).
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of, and expertise in, the Group's practices, procedures and policies, particularly those of Cyber Security, the Group Privacy Office and Group Procurement.
  • Being actively engaged, strong in stakeholder service, and being determined to simplify processes within L&GS and more broadly where applicable.
  • Work proactively and productively as an L&GS team member, including a willingness to share your expertise and knowledge with others.
  • Contribute to the improvement in L&GS's work practices and knowledge management.
  • Assist in managing legal external counsel and, where required, secondees.

We're interested in hearing from people who have:

  • 4-7 years of relevant post qualification legal experience.
  • Excellent tertiary qualifications in law and a current unrestricted NSW (or equivalent) practising certificate.
  • Relevant vendor negotiation experience at a top or mid-tier law firm in Australia or in-house, preferably at a financial services or other regulated institution.
  • Strong technical legal skills, including intellectual property rights, and interpretation and application of cyber security, privacy and data protection laws and regulations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills including the ability to provide clear, succinct plain English legal advice.
  • Deep curiosity about emerging legal risks and issues in technology, data protection, privacy and cyber security.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Strong work ethic and high integrity.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work calmly under pressure.
